Proper Lifting for Those Heavy Holiday Boxes

By January 18, 2018April 5th, 2024No Comments

With the holiday coming up soon, you’re likely to be doing some heavy lifting. Whether it’s carrying big gift boxes or hauling the stored decorations out, your back can sustain some heavy damage from this lifting if you’re not careful. Here are a few tips for proper lifting.

  • Bend at the Knees – Bend at your knees when picking up a box — never at your waist. Bending at the waist puts unnecessary tension on the back.
  • Lift With Your Legs – Use your leg muscles when you’re doing the lifting. Many people naturally tend to “lift with their back,” which is one of the leading causes of back pain and injury today.
  • No Side Movement – While you’re lifting a heavy box, avoid making any twisting and turning movements. This can cause spinal alignment issues and could even cause a back injury. If you need to turn the box, turn your whole body rather than just the upper half.

To have the best holiday season, it’s also important that you don’t overdo the activity. If you’ve got a lot of heavy lifting to do, considering doing it over a period of days to minimize the risk of injury. If you have any pain at all while lifting holiday boxes, call our chiropractor in Kennesaw right away so we can help.
